Roland JP-8080 Modeling Synthesizer Module

The new JP-8080 Analog Modeling Synthesizer Module offers an advanced Analog Modeling sound engine with 10-note polyphony, powerful External Audio Synthesis unlike anything on the market today, a unique built-in Voice Modulator, and SmartMedia" storage capability--all in a cool, retro-styled 6U rack-mount module with tons of knobs and sliders for easy sound shaping.

Features:

Redefining Sound Synthesis, Again.
When Roland introduced the groundbreaking JP-8000 synthesizer in 1997, its massive collection of front-panel knobs and sliders and equally massive analog synth sounds had techno musicians and analog synth freaks in awe. Clearly, Roland's Analog Modeling technology prompted descriptions not often associated with digital synthesis; words like "phat," "flexibility" and "control" resounded. The new JP-8080 Analog Modeling Synthesizer Module builds upon the success of the popular JP-8000, offering an advanced Analog Modeling sound engine with 10-note polyphony, powerful external audio synthesis unlike anything on the market today, a unique built-in Voice Modulator, and SmartMedia" storage capability--all in a cool, retro-styled 6U rack-mount module. (And, yes, we kept all the knobs and sliders intact.

The Phattest Classic Analog Sounds and Screaming Futuristic Tones--All From One Module!
Using Roland's acclaimed Analog Modeling technology, the new JP-8080 synthesizer module offers ultra-phat vintage analog sounds as well as futuristic sounds never heard before. The key to this massive sonic power is a dedicated onboard DSP oscillator which produces seven totally independent waveforms. So unlike modern PCM (sample-based) synths, the JP-8080 can instantly apply drastic tonal changes, envelope controls, sharp filters and radical sweeps--just like a classic analog synth. Similarly, the 10-voice polyphonic JP-8080 even sports a new Unison mode, combining all voices into one to make things downright scary.

But make no mistake; the JP-8080 is no analog synth knock-off. It's also a thoroughly modern instrument with all the convenience of Roland's latest technology. Because the JP-8080 sonically "models" the analog waveform in its enhanced DSP, it offers features not commonly associated with vintage synths: MIDI compatibility with all 40 knobs transmitting, its aforementioned 10-voice polyphony, External Audio, Instrument, and Mic inputs, a Voice Modulator, a Motion Control function, and dramatic effects processing capability including onboard Distortion effects.

External Audio Synthesis and a Voice Modulator: Sound Shaping Heaven!
The JP-8080 is enhanced by the inclusion of External Audio, Instrument and Mic inputs which can be used with powerful onboard external audio synthesis and a unique Voice Modulator. The JP-8080's two 1/4" External Audio inputs offer Peak Level indicators and Level Limiters to allow for precise shaping of external instrument/audio signals using the onboard OSC2 synth controls. This feature yields some very interesting results--filtering and effecting external audio in realtime--and can be used to construct entirely new sounds while OSC1 remains available for music making.

The external signals can also be sent through the Voice Modulator, which allows JP-8080 users to control the envelopes of synth sounds and external audio signals with the human voice, producing some classic and unique effects which are particularly dance-music friendly. There are three Voice Modulator modes: Formant Filter, Filter Bank and Vocal Morph Control. Formant Filter produces a variety of "talking" effects by analyzing the frequency bands from vocal sounds and applying them to incoming audio or synth sounds. Using the two dedicated and assignable Voice Modulator control knobs, the Formant Filter mode can produce some wild sounds and interesting modulations like "talking" breakbeats. The Filter Bank mode provides a powerful 12-band stereo filter for ultimate external audio processing. Finally, the Vocal Morph Control mode allows the JP-8080's synth sounds to be modified and filtered as desired based on mouth movement. Possible applications include "singing" into the JP-8080 for "wah"-type effects and filter control. In all, the Voice Modulator features 26 editable parameters including Ensemble level, Delay parameters, Noise parameters, Robot effects, and Release and Resonance controls, plus the ability to store your settings in one of 64 Performances for instant recall.

Professional Effects and Sonic Control
To complement its powerful sound engine, the JP-8080's onboard effects section features Flanger, Chorus, Distortion and Delay. Effects control is accomplished through the intuitive LCD and a host of dedicated knobs, while all effects settings can be stored with corresponding Patches for instant recall.

Similarly, all sonic shaping is intuitive, with 40 knobs and sliders ready for everything from mild tweaks to realtime mayhem. Better still, all knob and slider tweaks can be transmitted via MIDI for expanded sonic control. And there's even a Preview function available by using the Bank and Number keys as musical keyboard--great for checking sounds without a keyboard close by! To make connection easier, the JP-8080 features a Remote Keyboard Input to which users can simply attach a MIDI cable--without regard to which MIDI Channel the module is set to receive on.

SmartMedia Storage
In addition to its internal memory, the JP-8080 lets users store Patches, Performances, Motion Control loops and RPS patterns on optional 2MB and 4MB SmartMedia" cards. The Patches and Performances on a SmartMedia" card can be called out via simple program changes on the JP-8080, while all Motion Control and RPS patterns can be played back directly--great for live performance!
