Headphones come in a variety of different styles. Closed headphones - (meaning the cushion surrounds your ear and doesn't allow any exterior sound into your ear) can be used in recording studio applications where you don't want any sound from the headset "bleeding" into the recording mic(s). Open headphones - (usually identifiable by a light cushion that sits on the ear, allowing some exterior sound into the headphone mix) are great for onstage headphone monitoring where you can still hear a portion of the natural stage mix. There are also semi-open and semi-closed headphones available, as well as the brand new "Noise Canceling" type that lets the listener block out annoying background noises, such as air conditioners, airplanes and the like.
